09/01 11:01A rogue by any other name(open)09/01 16:08(8)
Settling into my rough sailor's cot in the hidden town of Norg, I began to reflect on my recent adventures...

Legendary Catnip Scout Ranger Nyiri had long been speaking with me about training toather for some time. She would take the guise of a ninja, and I would continue to refine my Warrior skills. When the day finally presented itself recently, I was so excited I managed to rope both of my childhood friends, Hemmingway and Harrow into joining us. Not only that, somehow I managed to attract CTY's own resident crafts master into the cause, Thistle!

Blades and voices rose and fell as the path between the burning jungles and the outlaw town of Norg became a bit safer due to our efforts. We all got tired, dirty, and much more experienced together. I stumbled off with sore muscles, barely able to see straight by the end into the alleyways of Norg for a bit of rest.

I canvassed the inhabitants of Norg the next morning to see if there was a way to establish my character in this infamous place. I came upon a nervous little man who tried to impress upon me the importance of some lost items the saughin had supposedly made away with. He seemed to me the sort of man who shuffled through his cargo manifests and paid more attention to his ale mug than his duties.

I gave him a stern look that said "I am a Bastoker, and I don't shirk *my* responsibilities", and told him I would find this hidden store-room of his and return some item of note so it was known where the crates had gotten off to.

A few moments later the enormity of what I had just promised hit me as I neared the threshold of the city. My hand strayed to my belt pouch where a less than half full bottle of Silent Oil was stored away. I strained to remember the tales whispered to me in the Selbinia shipyards on those late nights I spent fishing there. Suddenly I was snapped back to reality by a tune being thrashed out on a flashy accordian played by a Taru dressed in sailor's stripes, who was also doing a jig. His every movement seemed to mock my indecision!

I curled my hand into a fist and shook it towards the heavens. "I KEEP MY PROMISES!"
The Taru blinked at me, didn't stop playing his song and said "All righty, matey, watey!"
I strode with purpouse and passion into the Grotto once more.

The bottle got lighter and lighter as I sought low and high through the caverns of the grotto. Sneering saughins and foul smelling bats dogged my steps, but did not attack me. At last I cam to the legendary silver door and desperately sought the imprint where my cold, gleaming silver beastcoin would allow me to pass. My heart was pounding as if it sought to escape through my ears. Beyond the door, I shuffled through the half submerged labyrinth, clutching at the handle of my Centurion's Axe and frantically looking for some sign of a hidden lair.

At last I found it. With my bottle of Silent Oil dry, and another secret of the Tenshodo's customs was mine. Reading my hard won Warp Scroll, I vacated to the hidden town of Norg once more. Suprisingly to me, after getting the already satisfying feeling of showing that inept little clerk how business is truly handled, I was handed a scroll with elaborate calligraphy covering it.

By candlelight and a well deserved tankard of Pugil Wash (the local Norg brew.. hardly worhty of cleaning my boots, but the man selling it looked as if he had eaten several Galka to gain his current stature, and mumbled it was his own creation), I discovered I had indeed been handed the much sought after secrets of Utsemi for the arts of the Ninja.

XPost from FI Forum-

Rank 4/Delkfutt's Tower Run
12 Noon Pst/ 3pm EST

Rank 3 hopefulls (Harrow, Kaltooth, Rhiana, Shurano!), please be in Port Jueno/Qufim with the quest unlocked.
Any Escorts beyond Beanie, please coordinate with Miss Beans for escorting arrangements, and thank you for helping the lower ranked players, once again!

I will not actually be online for this one (monthly D&D game, woo), so best of luck to everyone!
Alessar > You want a hat? We'll give you a hat, mwahahaha.... (08/12 18:58)
Draque > I'm going to try to be there to sneak and inv as needed. I might get stolen away by RL though, so I'm not sure. (08/13 09:09)
Thistle > Think the new Rank 4 people will get the Davoi part of Rank 5 done in a week? If so, we still planning to do it together? If not, woo! We'll all just do it next Saturday! Let me know, baby! ;) (08/13 15:21)
Alessar > Davoi is pretty easy, it's just getting out that's a hassle. You can use an instawarp scroll but in my mind, the easiest thing would be to have a WHM with teleport along and do a group evac. (08/14 05:59)
Nyiri > Ohoho... the rank 4 run was a smashing simple success! I look forward to next week's rank5 runs! Incidentally, you can do the three legs in any order, so you don't *have* to have the Davoi run done before we make our Oztroja and Beadeaux runs... (08/16 08:31)
Linmayu > 1pm CST, huh? I might be able to come and escort for that. Saturdays are always crappy for me. (08/16 10:16)
Alessar > Just mentioning Davoi. I had vague hopes of getting to 36 by then so *I* could invis people in and evac them. Alas... not happening. (08/16 12:31)
Basyx > I could possibly do the wall of evil thing tonight. I have an evening of rest, laundry and FFXI ahead of me. I'll see who's around and online then! (08/17 12:56)
Hemmingway > OK ... Deffkult's Tower is Rank 4 ... sweet. What's in there? (08/20 21:13)

08/08 04:13 A place I call home(open)08/08 04:14(6)
Even my house moogle could sense something was amiss as I entered my home in the sprawling Mines district of Lower Bastok.

"Is .. everything alright, kupo?"

I don't think I even realized, my cheeks were wet. "Just sweat."
I tossed my cap aside, and sat heavily on my bronze bed. I had never been through something so utterly depressing before.

The Expiditionary Force went to Zulkheim, with the goal of fighting in the Dunes to re-take them. I had even bought a Neckchopper, something of a status symbol among warriors. I had heard of curses being a part of attacking Beastman banners, and thought I would not be able to use my Centurian's Axe. It was not the only miscalculation I made.

The chatter on the local Link Shall formed by the Expeditionary Alliance was inane. My mind recoiled slowly in shock as the hours and days went by. I could not.. I would not believe they were my countrymen!

Oh, I had heard and seen the like before in the marketplaces. Boisterous and contemptable, my own prejudices assigned them to being youth on leave from San'Doria, or visitors from further abroad. I could not fathom these ill tempered louts would truly be of Bastoker blood. But there they were, side by side with me today as my axe arm raised and fell, seemingly getting us no nearer our goal. The distinction between beastman and civilized man seemed to shrink with each foolish thing they said.

I had assumed these people were not my countrymen.

My father is a somewhat accomplished scribe and ministirial aide in the Metalworks, our city's center of government. He told me of San D'orian delegates visiting the city, routinely making arrogant demands. He would usually have what they brusquely demanded of him prepared well in advance. This would often confuse them into silence. Windhurt's delegates, when visiting, would make no less strenous demands on the city's accomodations. They would invariably give instructions on how to accomplish the simplest of tasks. Often my father would have the Galka foremen come up from their shifts in the mines to assist the Windhurst embassy with matters of ettiqute and satesmanship. The Taru would usually look on in dismay when they found incredibly well behaved and large helper in the form of Galka. They somehow just could not be condescendingly polite to them as they could to the Humes.

My father is charming, and the other nations never seemed to shake him. I'd like to think I never have been shaken by their citizen's either.

I'm not upset that we didn't take the dunes. Altana take that fire baked pile of sand, and the beastmen's desires to take it. I'm not upset that I choose the life of a soldier, and I see these things instead of the measured life of a scribe I could have surely had in the Metalworks. I'm not even upset that I have an incredibly expensive axe I shouldn't even be using anymore sitting in my Mog House. I'm upset that I can't pretend like Bastok is made up entirely of the kind of people I can be proud of.

Beanie > =/ No matter where you go you will always find those who lack a generous heart. You should continue to be proud of your fellow Bastokers. The lesser ones only contrast and highlight the true heroes of your nation. (08/08 08:31)
Linmayu > Yeah. Sadly, there are people like that in every nation. I'm afraid many take up adventuring because they don't have what it takes to succeed in any other trade. >.> Whereas really, the life of an adventurer demands more of us than any other trade possibly could, if we hope to truly make a difference in the world. (08/08 13:00)
Cade > Sadly, that is why I rarely participate in regional garrisons and/or expeditionary forces. I love my country, but I can only tolerate the common adventurer for so long.... (08/08 23:57)
Alessar > This may sound harsh but... if you wish to see the common adventurer elevated, then take up the challenge to elevate him yourself. This was a learning experience not only in the military exercise but in working with the rank and file. I believe you are hearing the call of a true leader. (08/09 05:16)
Bigken > You can lead a horse to water, but ya cant make 'm drink..........but if ya strong enough...ya can drown the bastard........ (08/09 05:56)
Baitzor > LOL (08/09 09:56)
Nimbex > But Tarus Can Breathe Water! Rar! (08/09 10:08)
Thistle > *in a small voice* Your father should be thankful he wasn't raised in San D'oria... (08/09 15:43)
Hemmingway > Not only alll of this .... but you remember Harrow? Yeah our friend from back home. Some say he runs with Quadav now. The HUMANITY!!!! (08/11 18:08)
Kieranthalar > A word of advice: Make Harrow see the error of his ways before it's too late. Running with Quadavs is not something people tend to survive. (08/12 09:53)

8/5 Rank 5 Mission Update!

The proposed time for the event is August 21st, 11am PST/2pm EST
This will provide for enough time for all the Rank 3 CTY members to get Rank 4! Please complete Mission 3-1 (also called "m7", I believe), for your home country, and you will get help with Delkfutt's Tower! After that it's only a little preperation in Jueno for Magicite!

Jueno is a city of splendor and wonder. Also of annoyingly high taxes, but that's a story for another time.

This is an entry to attempt to rally both people who need help getting to Rank 5 as well as those who would like to help them! I know of a few of each, but pelase come out of the woodwork here and declare your desire for help or desire to help, and I will attempt to coordinate a time that will work for people.

So far, the group looks like this-

The Professional Escorts
* Making it all possible
the Famous Miss Nyiri RNG/60 (smooth peanut butter)
the ineffable Miss Beanie MNK/56 (sweet chocolate)
BigKen (confirmed)
Nimbex (confirmed)
Baitzor (confirmed)
Sylf (confirmed)
Ahsn (confirmed)
Okgrez NIN/50-something (confirmed)
Allesar (confirmed)
Nif, Cade, Aurian, Draque (maybe?)
Linmayu (unconfirmed)

The Intrepid Adventurers
* Have Rank 4 and are ready for Magicite
Basyx War/32(confirmed)
Thistle Whm/32(confirmed)

The almost intrepid adventurers
* could join us if they make Rank 4
*** 8/14 a tower run will occur! Time TBA! Be in Jueno, and have the quest unlocked, Rank 3 people!

Kaltooth (confirmed)
Harrow Rdm/31(confirmed)
Shurano Blm/38 (confirmed)
Rhiana Whm/33 (confirmed)

Foxfingers (unconfirmed, haven't seen on much, could someone mention to her?)
Tailchaser (confirmed no, not interested)

Let me know here if you would like to join one of the three groups, or change your status between unconfirmed/confirmed, etc!
Remember- Rank 5 is hard to get! We want to have as many people on this run as possible so it's all done at the same time!

let me know if you're ok with date/time, and which job you'll be bringing, and I'll adjust the list!
*runs off to get 'CTY Magicite Marathon' T-shirts made*

Linmayu > Happy to help with rank 5, though I'm not sure how useful a 35MNK or 35PLD is for those endeavors. (08/03 14:26)
Basyx > Your help would be more than appreciated! My understanding is there is strength in numbers for this endeavor! (08/03 14:44)
Bigken > I can lend my help as well, especially when it comes to Yagudo Cursing! (08/04 06:56)
Thistle > Yay rank 5! Airship, I long for you so! (08/04 13:55)
Nimbex > Feel free to track me down, too. I'm not as high-level as some, but if there's help I can offer, I'll be happy to show up. (08/05 10:19)
Baitzor > I can help out on Sunday, but Saturday I've got RL plans. (08/05 11:02)
Linmayu > Hmmm. If I'm lucky I'll have a job by then, so I have no idea whether I'll be available. (08/05 18:31)
Basyx > Onw that makes you work on Saturday? awwww... ._. (08/05 18:34)
Alessar > The main thing to keep in mind about doing all this is that there is only 1 part that cannot be soloed and that is killing the 2 notorious monsters in Beaudeaux. Everything else can be done with a liberal application of sneak/invis, and a couple warp scrolls for easy exits. The only other thing that's a little tricky is opening the door to Castle Oz and lots of people have that trick down now. If my WHM gets up enough in levels I might be able to provide some help too; then again, maybe Thistle will catch up to me. :) (08/06 05:22)
Thistle > Hi! I'm good with the time! WHM 32! (And Al, I catch up with you every night, baby! ;) ) (08/06 10:17)
Alessar > I need Time Mage added to this game. It's a moral imperitive that I cast STOP on Thistle. ;) (08/06 11:07)
Linmayu > hahahahhahahah, I love you Alessar. (08/06 12:05)
Sylf > If you need a hand, I'd be happy to help out! ^^ (08/08 13:30)
Cade > pft... grab me when I'm not xping and I'll walk you through the Beadueax part. I had the lovely experience of doing it with an alliance, which made it easy, but also took 5+ hours. (08/09 00:02)
Nyiri > rng60! i'll be there in full af, laying the smack down upon anything that gets in my way! this trip will be a breeze with the calibre of escorts you have at your disposal (beaniekitty! we work remarkably well together! she is the sweet chocolate to my smooth peanutbutter!) (08/09 22:15)
Baitzor > I can help out on the 21st. Count me in! (08/10 10:33)
Beanie > Yum, chocolate and peanut butter *_* (08/10 10:46)
Cade > *gnaws on Beanie and Nyiri* (08/11 11:41)
Beanie > <is gnawed on :3 > I'm MNK56. Also, check your FI thread, you've got more volunteers and people in need of Rank 4 escort. I wouldn't mind taking a trip up the tower if you arrange one. I'm free most of the weekend. (08/11 14:21)

Delkfutt's Tower was big.. I mean BIG.. Fits most of the known world's population big.

Being escorted by the amazing Mithran heroes, Beanie and Nyriri, my small intrepid group scaled the many many staircases filled with insane pottery and indignant goblins.

Seeing the backflash from the explosions caused by Nyiri's Sidewinders slamming into Giants (who make funny faces when their midsections get pierced by flying Mithra shrapnel), I would see the Catnip Scouts emblem on her cap become lit up.
As I was settling down into my rent a room in Jueno that night, it reminded me of childhood memories....

Coming down the stairs one Lightsday morning, I saw a half dozen Mithra girls sitting in our kitchen. Even though I was walking quietly, I saw several sets of little ears go up and tails flip around, noting my presence. I finished walking into my family's humble kitchen, now filled with Mithra kittens all in neatly pressed uniforms. Before I could figure out what was happening, a wooden stool was being shoved under me, and a plate of Flatcakes was in front of me s a chorus of voices erupted around me:

"Troop 23, special operation GRRRREAT BIG BRRRREAKFAST underrrrway!"
"more srrrrryup"
"we're feeding you meow!"
"as troop sub leaderrrrr it is my duty to inform you..." a very well groomed kitten started.
"WAAAA! The FlourBag moved!"
"That wasn't the Flour, whiskerbrrrrain, it's Minyri in a RainCoat"
"*AHERRRRM* I'm talkign meow! As troop sub leader, I am reporting that..."
"oooh it was scarrrry.. she shouldn't wearrrrr that coat"
"I'm waterrrrproof!", the Floursack purred
The young sub troop leader persisted: "I am reporrrrting that your mother is out taking brrreakfast to your dad in the scrrrribe's office in the Metalworrrrrks.! It is ourrrrr duty to feed you breakfast!"
"Morrrrre Flatcakes!"
"But we gave him ten!" Indeed, I felt like I was going to burst.
"Hume boys need to eat as much as Dhalmel!"
"NO! rrrrreally?"
"That's what my meowom says... She helps cook forrrrr the Infantry up in Valkurrrrrrm"

I'm suprised I survived the morning. I actually thought I was going to explode into a shower of flatcakes and Pineapple Syrup. It turns out my mom had volunteered to be a Catnip Scout Troop leader while most of the little girl's moms were serving as irregular archery troops out in post war clean up operations. As the years rolled by, I was treated to stories of Mithran heroes of the Catnip Scouts, with their uncanny marksmanship and dextrous combt styles.

After seeing Miss Nyiri and Miss beans in action, I knew I had a great story for my mom when I went to go back and visit Bastok again.
Beanie > [Salute] Such a fond memory~! (07/20 15:45)
Linmayu > And have you ever met a San d'Orian non-adventurer who *wasn't* fruitier than a Kazham pineapple? (07/20 23:06)
Cade > ok that was adorable to read x.x (07/21 10:19)
Alessar > it was ^_^ (07/21 13:19)
Thistle > Hey, Basyx. Send me an email when you have a chance. thistle @ hot-hot-hot-catlove.com (remove the spaces). I want to talk to you. (08/03 10:26)
Alessar > O.o But ... you never ask me to e-mail you! And I invited you to get rank 5 along with me. ;_; *chibis and clings to Basyx* (08/03 12:03)
Basyx > we can all get Rank 5... together!! *Hair waving in the breeze, Heroic music playing* no, seriously.. I will attempt to organize it as best I can (08/03 12:08)

I know fear

I went to go find Hemmingway just now in the Mines district of Bastok where our families live. I wanted to comfort him, console him in this obvious period of strain in his life. Instead I found the local urchin children singing in an allyway. I grimaced and walked closer, knowing I shouldn't. I spotted a fresh poster on the alleyway wall, advertising "Talent Contest at Mr. Beef's this Lightningsday.. big Gil prizes!". When I questioned the children about the song, they confirmed the worst... Hemmingway had taught it to them...

"Bastok Anthem"

Born down in a mining town
I bought my first pick and I hit the ground
You end up like a Pug that's been beat too much
Till you spend half your life just leveling up

Born in the BSK!
I was born in the BSK!
I was born in the BSK!
Born in the BSK!

Got in a little hometown jam
So they put a sword in my hand
Sent me off to a foreign land
To go and kill the Beast Man!

Born in the BSK!
I was born in the BSK!
I was born in the BSK!
I was born in the BSK!
Born in the BSK!

Come back home to the Metal Works
Galkan Foreman says "Son this job really hurts"
Went down to see my Uncle Cid
He said "No way, not now kid"

I had a brother at Qu Fim fighting off the Giant Monks
He’s still there, and they’re not gone

He had a woman he loved in Konschat
Got a picture of them puttin’ down Au Lai shots

Down in the shadow of the Zehrun Mines
Out by the gas fires of the refinery
I'm 20 plus levels burning down the road
Nowhere to run, cuz I got a Chocobo

Born in the BSK!
I was born in the BSK!
Born in the BSK!
I'm a long gone Daddy in the BSK!
Born in the BSK!
Born in the BSK!
Born in the BSK!
I'm a cool rocking Daddy in the BSK!

Cade > Yay Bastok! *flexes* (07/07 09:45)
Nimbex > So sad that I don't know any of the other lines of the original. (07/07 11:12)
Alessar > I am seriously thinking a Bastok Expeditionary Force is in order this weekend. Apparently, I never got around to doing a supply run to Zulkheim. This must be rememedied! Plus, our young adventurers need to get their SJ items with outpost support! (07/16 17:44)

My childhood friend, Hemmingway has been attempting to help the town patrol of the outpost town of Selbinia in their patrols. He's hoping that the fame and good work, I think, will help him in Paladin training in the future. I honestly fear for his mind, though, as I think the hot Valkrum sun is getting to him.
He recently sent me a letter with a new song he had written-

Where have all teh Rangers gone.

Oh you get me ready in your tallow chocobo
Why don't we go sit down in the shade
Take shelter on my front porch
The dandy lion sun scorching,
Like a glass of cold Orange Au Lait
I will do crafting if you pay all the bills

CHORUS:

Where is my Hemmingway
Where is my Highland song
Where is my happy ending
Where have all the Rangers gone

Why don't you stay the evening
Kick back and watch the … Smoke Stacks
And I'll fix a little mithkabob to eat
Oh I know your back hurts from fighting in the Ballista Match
How do you take your coffee my sweet
I will water the plants if you pay all the bills

Chorus

I am wearing my new subligar tonight
But you don't, but you don't even notice me
Say goodbyes
Say goodbyes
Say goodbyes

We finally sell the Spatha
When we leveled up yeah
And you took the job in Sandy’
You made friends on the dunes
And you joined them at the beach
Almost every single day of the week

Chorus

I will craft the mithkabobs while you go have a beer
Where is my Bastokian man
Where is his shiny gun
Where is my lonely ranger
Where have all the Rangers gone
Yippee yo, yippee yeah

I am proud to be part of the Bastokian branch of the CTY. I hope to bring to my fine city the traditions taught to me concerning the foul and terrible Yagudo culture.
I have already begun to bribe small urchin Bastokian children to mold Yagudo effigies in clay which the Galkan Mine workers then sit on and crush ceremonially.

Addendum- Inform Galkan mine workers to not chase small urchin street children after discovering they sat on desecrated Yagudo figurines.
Linmayu > Smashing the Yagudo is an excellent way to curse them. Welcome to CTY! ^_^_^ (06/05 21:54)
Nimbex > Good show, Basyx! That's definitely a good idea, and with any luck, they'll keep doing it when you're elsewhere, travelling around the world. (06/05 22:09)
Jynx > Bastokans are the enemy! (06/06 11:04)
Nyiri > Yagudo are the enemy! (06/06 13:19)
Desant > Now now, Jynx. Bastokans shouldn't be regarded as foes. Where else would we get willing arrow fodder? (06/06 14:09)
Coriolis > Jynx... Galka come from Bastok. (06/06 22:55)
Quinton > CTY is an organization that is blind to your national affiliations. Even the snooty sandorians are not excluded ^^ (06/06 23:34)
Nimbex > Galka come from Kuzotz! (06/07 00:23)
Beanie > Welcome Basyx ^^ Hey, at least Windy and Bastok *share* first place this week ^^ (06/07 09:00)
Hemmingway > We need to dress someone up in Yagudo feathers and have the run through town like prize chicken. The children can throw fruit, veg, and copper ore at him in ceremonial ritual. :) (08/11 16:16)
