http://www.qj.net/Final-Fantasy-XI-getting-three-new-expansions/pg/49/aid/126609

This is kinda neat news, but....

It would be nice for them to either say how they plan to handle DLC on the PS2 or if they plan to terminate PS2 support altogether.

As it stands, it's just kinda leaving me hanging. ^^;

Yes, I'm still alive and my character's still around, I just haven't felt anything more than a slight twinge of nostalgia for some locations within Vana'Diel lately. Mirrsie's been talking about picking it back up again lately, though, so we'll see what happens....
Nimbex > I would expect that the size of these expansions would be small enough that they won't be a problem to download. I'd expect that the bulk of space in an expansion is areas. If there are no new areas, I'd expect these would fit into 50M each, which would be similar in size to a large patch? I think it was like 55M when the real expansions game out, just to give all the new models and shared data to everyone. (08/11/24 10:21)
Chaylinn > Oh, disc space isn't the issue at all. Anyone who hasn't done anything rude to their PS2 like I have or has a Japanese PS2 where more games supported the HDD likely has 30GB of free space. It was just slightly odd that they didn't mention anything AT ALL about delivery to PS2 customers. (08/11/24 15:22)
Nimbex > The article doesn't seem to mention delivery for any platform? I would just expect it's sent over like any other patch, regardless of platform. And it says it'll be released for all platforms at once. So, yeah, I'd say it's just like a patch. Hey, for comparison. When TAU came out, you had to download either a 20M patch or a 40M patch, depending on whether you had the expansion or not. I think! (08/11/24 15:33)
Chaylinn > Right, but you went out and purchased the disc. You would have to actually have a way to purchase the new expansion on the PS2. Downloading and storage isn't the problem so much as transaction and delivery. These are well-known aspects on the PC (Direct2Drive) and X360 (XBox Live), but they've never done anything similar on the PS2. I assume it'll be covered by some sort of POL Patch, but if that ends up happening, I sincerely hope they start to use that for more than just this instance and open up more DLC options through POL. Then again, given their recent announcement of support for the PSN, you never know... (08/11/24 19:51)
Nimbex > The way you'd purchase the expansion on the PS2 is the same way as you purchase a content ID. You pay $10, and it's one-time instead of recurring. POL already has features like this, and has even had a way to activate some expansions through POL for people who just borrowed installation media. Similarly, once the content is activated, it can be sent over in the next patch update process, just like anything else which is sent to players based on what content they have activated. So, my take is that everything can and will be done with the existing methods, not a console-oriented sales path. Though I wouldn't be surprised if Microsoft has extra limitations on how it's done, I expect PC and PS2 will be identical. No explicit download, just patching. (08/11/25 11:12)

Oh holy crap...
It's Wednesday night already?
'tis the night where we try static again.

Meet in Jeuno
I want to hear suggestions
Where we fight and perhaps hit 55.

We need one more
Another melee, I hope
One more member
Would make our group complete.

AAAAAAAALL of you please....
Prep gear and foodstuff choices.

O NI-IGHT *cough* I'm... fiiiiiine....
Tonight... We'll fight quite nice.

O night... Di...*COUGH* f-f-fiiiine!
Oh, crap... I lost my voice....
cealia > :D i might be a little late because i just moved into a new apartment yesterday and i have yet to hook up my pc. all the parts seem to be there on the desk, just not connected.. if only ffxi came mac friendly i could play it on the imac. hooray for only having one cord for that. (08/05/01 02:42)
Quistie > Eww. Imac. Colibris would be good for 54 up. Or we could go old school and head to Boyahda. Colibris might be easier and they are very squishy. They do steal food though. (08/05/01 03:27)
cealia > imacs are great and beautiful! (08/05/01 07:59)
cealia > what's the status on the late night static? (08/05/21 03:55)
Chaylinn > I dunno. I think I'm just gonna call it off completely for now. I'm really no good at leading and organising stuff like this. I'm sorry I held up your WHM levelling for so long, Cealia. (08/05/23 00:50)
cealia > *hug* it's okay, i just hadn't heard anything for awhile and was curious. *nod* i hope mirrsie is feeling better! (08/05/23 07:04)

OK, this time, I'm going to call off the Late-night static ahead of time. This time, there are foreseen circumstances that will prevent Mirrsie from playing Wednesday night. She will be travelling in the Arizona and New Mexico area, and though her hosts in New Mexico would be able to provide her access to FFXI while she's there, they have not played in years, and would likely not be updated. Not to mention the fact that she'd be JUST settling in on Wednesday.

She's going to be there for two weeks, so I'll keep you all posted as to what will be happening on Wednesday 4/9.

I was really pleased with how Last Wednesday went, and it only ferments my wish that we could have a BST as our sixth. Unfortunately, Mykityki said that his schedule was rather unpredictable and that he couldn't commit to helping us out on a regular basis.

I'd like to get some suggestions on how to help with Hate Management, too. I knew our back line would be getting more attention due to Quistie-RNG, but I didn't anticipate it'd be THAT drastic. I think the STR-down status that the Crabs were throwing out likely had a lot to do with it, though. When we noticed that and put Cealia (and Iliriya) on the task, things got a little better. I think Mykityki had forgotten about Snarl as well. All the more reason to land a heavy hitter for that last slot, I guess!
Chaylinn > Ah, never mind. Turns out that Mirrsie's schedule is a bit less hectic than I thought, and she'll be at a friend's place in Arizona that has recently started so she'd be fully updated. (08/03/30 18:38)
Cydori > Should I find another person for Thursday night xp this week? I'd rather she be free to relax and enjoy herself in whatever way she wishes... which could include FFXI if she felt like it, but doesn't necessarily have to. (08/03/30 19:42)
Chaylinn > I'll check with her on that. She'd actually be using a PS3 in Arizona, so she'd be a bit more comfortable than when using her PC at home. (08/03/30 23:27)
Quistie > Good thing I wasn't using a gun. Although I am curious as to just how much damage I can dish out if I have a decent and silver bullets. (08/04/03 04:42)
Quistie > A decent *gun* and silver bullets. *gasp* Typo! (08/04/03 04:44)

Yep. That's right. Holyknight Emblem ∮∮∮∮ is still the max. Soo... I just have to 'refresh' the medal every 30 days.

On the upshot, the Cobra Hat is love. It's purple so it matches my Arakan Samue, and gives Att+4, Store TP +4, and Enmity -4. Oddly enough, SAM cannot wear it. DNC can though. Heh... h'ray for a total of +35 Att on a relatively low budget!

I'll post a screencap when I finally get around to dumping again.

As for the Late-Night static, I finally heard back from Kyubi who's had a busy RL schedule and will not be able to hop back in. No prob. At least I know now. ^^ So we just need one more DD. Preferably someone with WAR that can help with Hate Management so Mirrsie can have a little more leeway with casting her shadows. Again, DRG, BST, PUP and the like would be my preferences, and I'd have no problem holding a spot if you think you could make it in the near future.

We tend to gather at about 11:30p CDT (10:30 MDT, 9:30 PDT, 12:30a EDT) on Wednesday night/Thursday morning.

OK, I've been trying to get this thing off the ground, and I just keep running into obstacles. I knew it wouldn't be easy, but this is kinda ridiculous.

So far, I've run into about 4 or 5 people who had a melee character at the proper level to join the late-night static, but they were Duoing (or Trioing) with a Mage, and since we're already mage-heavy, I've had to turn them down. I expected to run into this once or twice, but... good god, what are the odds? We're freakin' lvl 53!

I don't wanna see this Idea die, but it's just really been challenging to try to fill those last few gaps with the little bit of time I've had online over the past few weeks.

If anyone has a melee job that's BELOW 53, and would be able to make a session that STARTS at 11:30p CST on a Wednesday night in the future with a little bit of work in between, lemme know. We'll save a place for you. Right now, we just need some heavy hitters, but I have preference for some of the jobs that you don't normally see too often in parties. BST or DRG would be fun, but like I said, I'm just mainly looking for folks that can help us kill things just a tad faster. We did great with Zaalus SAM and Random BLU last week. If another Melee-mage job class joins (DRK, BLU, PLD, etc) then I might like to have a DNC handy for Aspir Samba as well.

As for tonight, I'll keep an eye out for some random folks to snag, but I think I'm gonna call it if I don't get any bites by 1:00a. By that point, it's just too late to get everyone assembled and get a decent start.
cealia > oh man. chay i'm sooooooooo sorry! i totally forgot about static tonight. omg i'm so sorry i feel really bad :( i just got sidetracked by other projects and it slipped my head. (08/03/20 06:46)
cealia > there! i made a sticky. it says "static wednesday @ 10:30" and put it on my monitor. never to forget again! again i'm sorry and i feel bad. i know this late night thing is frustrating when people don't show, and every other week when i log in for it i've been super excited. again sorry for not showing up :( *cry* (08/03/20 06:59)
Chaylinn > If anything, Cealia, we were concerned! You don't normally space stuff like this out. We DID gain a RNG for the Static, though.... so all we'll need next week will be a DD-type! (08/03/20 17:05)

As was mentioned in Cealia's journal, things did not exactly go as planned tonight... that however was not all a bad thing.

Iliriya was actually WHM52, rather than the 53 she claimed on the CtY boards. Kyubi hadn't quite made it to 53 either. Between that and my own BLU just barely being sufficient for a subjob, we spent the night sprucing up to make sure that when we get together next week, we're good to go!

Thanks to Cealia for helping me learn Sidewinder last night. I think I'm caught up on BLU spells through 28 now! I'm also glad to see Iliriya so excited about being a DD WHM, and Mirrsie is looking forward to getting back into the FFXI swing of things!

So, as a refresher (since it appears we cover all four (continental) US Time zones between the five of us!) our next meeting time will be:

March 5, 11:30p CST
(Mar 5, 9:30p PST)
(Mar 5, 10:30p MST)
(Mar 6, 12:30a EST)

I'll have to get Kyubi on here at some point in the near future to make planning easier. ^^
cealia > i died a few times last night trying to raise Ili, so now i'm 52. but i will get the few hundred xp for next week :) (08/02/28 21:57)
cealia > i mean. Ili was in GC and we got gangbanged by a few bats and an NM. so we all died.. that's what happened :P (08/02/28 22:00)
Chaylinn > ONO BATBANGD. No worries, Cealia. Being one or two fights from 53 is different from being 6k from 53. (08/02/28 23:30)
cealia > okay coolio. (08/02/29 01:49)
Iliriya > yeah.. sorry about the mistake in my level. I could swear I was 53. (At least I was only one level off though!) However, do not fear! I stayed up til god knows when and i'm 4.5k~ into 53 now! :D (08/02/29 09:31)
Iliriya > Also I'm way excited! Lilith's rod didn't drop and the manaclipper nm didn't spawn the whole time I was camping it, but! A time hammer appeared on the AH! I actually spent a bit of money to get a bellicose mantle and a strike shield as well. I think I'll post my DD setup in my diary thing! (08/02/29 09:34)
Chaylinn > Bitchin'. I'm actually less than 2k into 53 myself, but that's not that big of a problem. ^^ Glad to hear about the Time Hammer! I've been in Chicago the past few nights with Mirrsie, Nimbex, Linmayu, Zoofster, Kireila and Treasa so I've not made any progress on my stuff yet. ^^ (08/03/02 08:27)
cealia > i miss zoofy :( *cries* (08/03/04 03:34)
Chaylinn > Heh... I pestered him on several occasions over the course of the night to come back to us from EQ2. No luck yet as far as I can tell. (08/03/04 03:54)
cealia > tell him cealia needs more chew toys cause nimbex has a pointy head. (08/03/05 21:46)
Chaylinn > I think he still hangs out on the IRC channel, so you might have the opportunity to tell him yourself! On a side note: I haven't seen Kyubi at all over the past week. Has anyone else had the chance to poke at him? He was a little confused about the timing last week.... (08/03/05 21:58)
cealia > i haven't seen him ; ; (08/03/05 23:25)
Cydori > Chay, would you please do me a favor and ask Mirrsie if she's up for xp tomorrow evening, if I don't see either of you in-game tonight? (08/03/06 01:21)
Chaylinn > Will do. Was planning to double-check that anyway. (08/03/06 02:15)
cealia > i'm like.. 1.2k from 53 now btw. i died again beadeaux cause i got gang raped by a bunch of orcs. (08/03/06 02:16)
Chaylinn > ONO ORCBANGD. That's alright. We'll moderate the usage of Rings to help folks catch up. ^^d Also, I wanna stay away from the part of Beadeaux that's got Orcs innit. Those have got to be some bad-ass mofos to be hanging out in Quadav territory. (08/03/06 02:30)

Late-night Static(open)08/02/28 01:20(109)
So I got it in my head to snag a bunch of the night-owls I've been seeing on CtY over the past few weeks for a late-night static. Cealia had just dinged 53, Kyubi was not far behind as BST, I hadn't touch RDM inna year....

After my initial scouting run, we have a 5-person team. It's a pretty decent setup and we only lack some additional muscle power on the front line to make it really shine. Fortunately, finding a random DD is usually a LOT easier than finding a random Healer on a given night.

I will also whole-heartedly encourage experimentation with subjobs and the like to see if anything weird can end up working out well!

Our first outing will be Wednesday Night, 2/27 (unless there are any conflicts...) and we will be starting after Cealia gets home from work at about 11:30p CST. If any DDs at level 53 would like to join in and can stay awake a few hours into the new morning, lemme know!

EDIT: Current plan is to beat up Beetles in Garlaige. (Yes, yes, Nimbex.... we're going to GC next. ;) ) Their Light and Ice weakness should prove useful for Iliriya and I to take advantage of with Banish and Enblizzard. BSTs can use a Lizard Jugpet to intimidate, but should avoid using a Mandragora. As for Mirrsie, Huton and Hyoton will be handy... Huton to weaken to Ice and Hyoton to attack that weakness!

Chaylinn (RDM/BLU) - 53
Mirrsie (NIN/WAR) - 54
Iliriya (WHM/RDM) - 53
Cealia (WHM/BLM) - 53
Kyubi (BST/NIN) - 51 (He's promised to catch up by the time we get together!)
cealia > what do ya think about whm/bst? that's weird. (08/02/26 01:34)
Chaylinn > That could be fun... We'll see how things go! I'm thinking of having Iliriya melee on Wed., but between she and I with Blink/Stoneskin and Kyubi and Mirrsie with Utsusemi, I don't think we'd NEED you to have a mage subjob. Two Jugpets could possibly even make up for the lack of a sixth Party member! (08/02/26 02:07)
cealia > okay coolies. bst sub it is! (08/02/26 05:16)
Nimbex > WHM can't equip any jugs, though! Furthermore, charming pets is reportedly based on MIN(BST level, main level), so a WHM50/BST who wants to charm will charm better if they have BST50 than if they have BST25. Or so the rumor goes. (08/02/26 15:58)
cealia > aww, i can't use a jugpet as a whm? (08/02/26 18:34)
Chaylinn > Awwwww... Gotcha. Good to know! (08/02/26 20:34)
cealia > yeah.. well, the only other class that wouldn't be a gimped sub for my whm is blm. (08/02/27 05:36)
Chaylinn > Hmmm.... If you'd be WHM/BLM, that might allow me to experiment a little bit since the Elemental Debuffs would be covered. I might show up as RDM/BLU or something. ^^ (08/02/27 22:27)
cealia > that sounds like a plan. RDM/BLU would be interesting, as i've never really partied with a BLU anyway. (08/02/28 00:07)
Chaylinn > Heh... Only problem is that this means I'll have to start levelling BLU on the side. It's currently at 26: If I level tonight, I'll have OMG GIMP SUB. Granted, there are no new spells at 27, but it's a pride thing. ;) (08/02/28 01:19)
cealia > understandable.. :) same with me. that and not being yelled at by nimbex.... (08/02/28 01:57)
Chaylinn > I want this static to be as angst-free as possible. Playing a game should be fun; playing with friends even moreso. As we go along and get settled into whatever subjobs we're playing with, then we'll be able to focus better on keeping those caught up. This whole thing was a rather spur-of-the-moment Idea, so I'm not expecting any miracles on the first night! (08/02/28 02:18)

Curious, I followed the link, which brought up a similarly-puzzling page. Being the clever bloke I can be sometimes, I took a look at the source code to see if it would uncover clues... Only to find this hidden in the SWF embed tag:

I know Zoofster went to school in DeKalb, IL... Does he go to NIU? *worry*

http://www.reuters.com/article/newsOne/idUSKRA48086720080214?pageNumber=1&virtualBrandChannel=10005&sp=true

If he does, I'd definitely like someone to make sure that he's OK!

(edit: Specifying WHICH DeKalb to avoid further confusion ;) )
Cydori > Talking with him on IRC now, and he's fine. He was there last semester, but not this one. His cousins do go there, but they're okay, thankfully. (08/02/15 01:11)
Chaylinn > Oh, that's good. Hate it when something like that hits close to home! (08/02/15 01:16)
Elizara > That's good. And for a second there, I thought it was here in GA, in DeKalb County..(I was born there in RL.) (08/02/15 01:53)

NIN just got a lot more fun.

I hit lvl 15 last night, which means I got to eat 6 scrolls in rapid succession. They were sweet in my mouth, sour in my stomach and a right bastard to my pocketbook.

But oh my... This is fun. I only had the tools to cast Huton and Hyoton. Once I get the other tools, I should be able to pretty much constantly be spellcasting. Pair that with some Fast Cast, and I just might trot out RDM/NIN at some point.

I have plans to try to get my crafting skills to the point where I can just craft my own Ninja Tools, but in some cases, that's actually more expensive than just buying them from the AH. If people were complaining about how expensive NIN is just because of Shihei, they'd be truly appalled if they actually bothered to cast OTHER spells as well.

That being said, I hope to put off partying as NIN for as long as possible. I hate having to be directly responsible for the party's well-being as a Tank or a Healer. I deal damage. I deal damage with style. Well, OK, I debuff pretty well, too. Main point being that I will be a Ninja who is a 'master of assassins', not a 'master of cheezing'... And just as MNK/RDM before it, I'll have no problem with turning down parties who expect otherwise.
Nimbex > Yes, spinning the wheel for a couple hours is terribly expensive. Of course, it's also terribly effective. NIN40/RDM20 does amazing damage. At least, I saw how good NIN40/BLM was. (08/02/12 19:12)

Promotion Theories(open)08/01/29 10:39(104)
Last night was the first time I did not immediately qualify for a Campaign promotion. It was close to the 6th-day turnover, and I had netted about 9k Allied Notes. This time though, about 5350 of the Notes I earned were from Campaign Ops rather than battles, so I probably actually earned less Notes than I had previous weeks due to the fact that I wasn't blowing as much on Teleports to battles.

So all in all, this seems to be leaning toward 1000 Gross Allied Notes per Rank. Meaning that if you spent no Notes at all on Teleports or Temp Items or whatnot, you'd need 12,000 AN to get promoted past Holyknight Emblem (the 12th rank) on the fifth day from your last promotion.

This might increase on each subsequent day after 5, since some people report needing upwards of 20k after neglecting their 'duties' for too long.... But this at least seems to be a good ballpark figure to go by.

It may sound intimidating at first, but at Holyknight I've been able to do Crimson Domino III for 1000AN a pop. Once per day for 5 days and there's 5000 AN right there. I've also found that I tend to get more AN from battles by watching the /cmap, waiting for battles to start, and joining the fray rather than staying in one place and just camping it out.

Hopefully I can get a few thousand more AN tonight and break through to the 'Wings' tier. ^^d
Chaylinn > Oh... uhm... Or it COULD just be that nothing higher than Holyknight has been implemented yet and won't be until the next patch. ^^; *facedesk* ... ... IGNORE ME! (08/01/29 10:37)

Finally...

Ever since they'd opened up the list of Allied Notes goodies to be able to view ALL the items, not just the ones you can currently obtain, I'd had my eye on these.

Cobra Baghnakhs (L71) - DMG +15, Delay +55, Atk +7, Enhances 'Resist Poison'.

Compared to the Destroyers (DMG +18 [AFTER 500 WS Points...], Delay +48, Crit +6%), they're pretty damn good, though perhaps not better.

So I got my Copper Emblem of Service tonight and ponied up the 20,000 AN for the nifty, shiny new toys.

I'll play with them later. Now I sleep.

As a side note... I'd be happy to snag any of the top-rank items for CTYers that would like them. I have 20,000+ AN just hanging out right now.

Cobra Baghnakhs (L71): DMG +15, Delay +55, Atk +7, Enhances 'Resist Poison' effect - WAR/MNK/DRK/BST/NIN/PUP

Cobra Knife (L71): DPS 8.77, DMG 25, Delay 171, HP +16, MP +16, Enhances "Resist Curse" effect - WAR/THF/PLD/DRK/BRD/RNG/SAM/NIN/DRG/COR/PUP/DNC

Cobra Bow (L71): DMG 77, Delay 524, RAcc +5, Enhances "Resist Blind" effect - WAR/PLD/DRK/RNG/SAM

Chaylinn > After a little bit of math, I worked out that the approximate DPS at 75 with no merits for the Cobra Baghnakhs are 8.28 vs the Destroyers' 8.93 (After unlock). That's pretty close, and I couldn't figure out how to work in the ATT+7 for the Cobras. (08/01/06 19:58)
Shadowneko > fun stuff... (08/01/07 13:55)
Nimbex > The Crit+ is way nice, though. But still not cool enough for anyone other than a monk to actually use them, it seems. (08/01/07 18:05)
Zaalus > Its chay! *pets chaylinn* Now go punch some taru's for me! (08/01/19 20:57)
Chaylinn > I haven't punched any Tarus, but I MPK'd Lin, myself and Mirrsie durng an attempt at the Windurst Mission Cardian fight yesterday... Does that count? (08/01/20 01:49)
Shadowneko > bad Chaylinn! MPKing people! (08/01/28 13:23)

Something I plinked together and submitted just in time for the new year...

It's a handy little search tool (with Vana'Diel clock) that you can embed into an iGoogle page. I think it will even work independently in another page, but I haven't tested that yet.

The only other similar tool used Somepage. Heh. This one not only uses FFXIclopedia, but also has a handy search field for FFXIAH.

Test it out, and lemme know what you think!

There is a loud scream and a flare of light shoots towards the sky.
Below the flare, you hear Chaylinn scream 'HEAR ME FOR I HAVE CONQUERED!'

As the light fades you realize a new superhero has been born.

Congratulations! You are now Level 75!
======================================
Mirrsie and Aeschere will get it....

Anyhow, boosh. I did it by cursing Yags, too. Quistie PL'd me for my last 500 or so XP. After this screencap, I 'celebrated' as a good MNK/RDM should. Enblizzard + Hundred Fists.

*glee*

(Quote of the night from Quistie: "I don't know whether I should be impressed by your stubbornness or disturbed by it...")

Quistie > And the answer to that is...maybe a little of both. :P (07/12/21 08:45)
Phht > Grats~! You know, from the "loud scream and a flare of light" part, I was almost expecting "THERE CAN BE ONLY ONE!" >.>; (07/12/21 09:15)
Alessar > LOL I get it too. Now where's my free 10 minutes of double xp for you superheroing? (07/12/21 14:07)
Linmayu > What a good way to hit 75! Congratulations! :DDDDD (07/12/21 14:13)
Mirrsie > Congratulations, hon. I will make dinner when I am better to celebrate. You still should have woken me up though to see the 75ness! (07/12/21 16:32)
Nimbex > Wow, awesome. Once you got past that 70, it was all downhill for you. Good choice on killings! (07/12/21 17:17)
Zaalus > KICK ASS! You now can go punt Nimbex for me as my was to celebrate! Then go get killed Zaalus style and hit 74 again lol. (07/12/21 21:34)
Cydori > Yay, congratulations! It's a good week for getting 75. ^_~ (07/12/21 21:42)
