Today I'm going to discuss the new Synergy system in laymen Beanie terms. I haven't found any guides on Wiki that really explains it, so what I've learned was either begged from Renard or through the blood, sweat and tears of experimentation. First off, you can skip everything the Synergy Engineer has to say. It can be condensed into a bottle cap of practical knowledge and an abundance to story about their quest to refine the technology. Or as I prefer to think of it, as SE using players as beta testers for FFXIV.

I'm going to assume you've already done the quest to get your Synergy Crucible. That's the key item that allows you to use the Synergy Furnaces in town. Wiki has a list of those (not under Synergy, oddly enough), but if you're in Windurst you can find one right outside the Waters MH on the right and by the AH in Walls. The other term you're going to become very familiar with is Fewell. Think of Fewell as the currency that allows you to make adjustments during your synth.

Each synth has an elemental power to it that is the target number you're aiming for to result in a successful synth. For the sake of this post, we're going to use Orange Juice as our synth. It has Water 30 as it's energy. The synth caps at 7.

So you've got your crucible. You've got some Oranges (you can by them from Baehu-Faehu) by the Waters gate. Approach the Synergy Furnace and cuddle it. The damn things are like Runic Portals in that you have to be nose-close to them if you want to use them. When you click on it you'll get a 3-line message that you claim of Furnace and this is where the problems start. If you walk too far away from the Furnace without clicking it again to relinquish claim you'll get messages. If you relinquish claim you still might get messages when you walked too far away. There's also a chance that if you leave and come back it'll warn you not to walk too far away and then tell you you've relinquished claim. Then give you that message repeatedly without ever allowing you to take claim again. This happened to me several times. I don't have any sure fire way to fix it, but leaving for a while (there a time out if you don't throw your ingredients in there fast enough) and coming back worked. So did zoning, but that could've been a time out rather than zoning.

Okay, so you've got a Furnace and it's actually going to let you use it. Trade 4 Oranges to it and then click. The first option will be to add Fewell and get you several lines of status spam. You want to add Water Fewell to get it up around 30. Each time you add Fewell it will add a random amount of Water Energy (like 5-10) and take 1 Fewell from your stock. Adding Water Fewell will up the Water Energy, but also lower the Fire Energy. I'm sure this point is more important in later synths, but we're just trying to make Orange Juice here. It will take 3-5 Fewell additions to get the Energy high enough to complete the synth (90% of the time it was 4). You'll get a message that prompts you to select "End synergy" once the Energy is high enough. Once you've ended that you'll get another message telling you of your success. Click on the Furnace one more time to take out your Orange Juice and relinquish control of the Furnace. You'll also get some leftover cinder that you can trade to the NPC for items that I'm not sure what the use is, but you'll get a disgusting amount of cinder before you're done. It caps at 10000.

Every time you make an adjustment to the synth there is a chance that you'll get a Synergy skill up. So in the above example there were 3 to 5 opportunties. You can fidget with the synth some to increase the opportunities by Operating the Pressure Value (relieve pressure on the synth), consumes 3 Dark Fewell, Operate the Safety Lever (impurity ratio will decrease), consumes 6 Dark Fewell, or Repair the Furnace, consumes 6 Light Fewell.

I should probably stop for a moment and explain that while you're doing the synth the Furnace's "HP bar" is going down. Repairing will refill the bar so you have longer to work on the synth you're making. There's also the chance that the Energy you're working with will go wild and Overload (explode), doing damage to yourself and the Furnace. Fortunately, I was synthing on MNK and could easily soak a couple hundred HP if something went wrong :x

Anyhow, getting back to Fewell. Notice that all of this is consuming Fewell as you go along. With your shiny new crucible you'll start with a full load of 99 of each, but that lasts about as long as your friend handing you 500g and telling you to go buy some armor off the AH. There are 3 ways to get more Fewell. The most economical way (though not at the moment) is to fork over orbs that require Alchemy 35ish and colored rocks to make. Each orb gives 50 Fewell and the NQ synth makes 3 orbs. This is great except that demand at Bastok and Mhaura for colored rocks is absolutely peaked and good luck getting your paws on a colored rock right now. I tried. Everything was sold out in Mhaura before 10 game minutes had passed after the guild was opened z.z

Fortunatley, there are two other methods for getting Fewell if you're feeling determined! You can trade crystals on a 1:1 ratio to get more Fewell of the element traded. You have to claim the Furnace before you do the trade. I was doing it before I tossed more Oranges into the juicer >.>; You can also pay the Synergy Engineer 100g per Fewell to refill your stock. He won't ask you which element you want refilled. He'll refill everything at the same time, so this option might not be appealing if you only want a certain element restocked.

So that's how you do Synergy in a nutshell. Now [pulls out soapbox] let me tell you why SE can take it and shove it up its ass until they bleed to death. About the only thing SE has gotten right is the number of Furnaces that are available and making it so players can have their own Furnace fairly early in skill progression (by level 5 Synergy skill). In any other craft in the game you could sneeze and get level 5 skill. The rate of skill-ups for Synergy is abysmal. Let's review how this works one more time:

* Drop ingredients in.
* Add Water Fewell.
* If you don't fiddle with the levers you'll do this 4 times per synth on average.
* If you do fiddle with the levers you'll consume 3 Dark, 6 Dark, or 6 Light.
* Every time you do a Fewell consuming action there's a chance of skill up.

... I have used well over *400* Water Fewell and I'm at 1.7 Synergy. Renard assures me this isn't normal. Aar says it sounds like how Synergy has treated her.

I won't whine on the cost (even though it has cost me to do that many synths). I've been told break-synthing is the way to go for this and if you have access to lots of Fewell I can see that being the case.

No, what gets me is the cost in *time*. Before I threw my hands up in disgust I'd had no fewer than 80 opportunities to get a skill up without getting a single one. And keep in mind that when I do get the elusive skill up, half the time it was a generous 0.2. Even skill ups in other crafts post-60 (where you only get 0.1s) are faster than this bullshit. I RESENT with a burning unreasonable passion having my time wasted and that's all that Synergy has been thus far. I passed my Orange squeezing days years ago when I skilled up Cooking. Now I get to do it all again and have it take *much* longer than just doing the synth using an established craft? Are you shitting me? Is this how SE intends to keep players forking over their $12.95 a month?

All I wanted was Synergy 5 so I could get my own Furnace. At the pace I'm going I expect to shovel gil into the Furnace and have it take multiple days to accomplish. I have better things to do than this. I could be fishing or skilling some other craft where skill-ups actually happen. Even just bazaar idling has the potential to be more profitable and time-worthy than Synergy has thus far.

Renard, you have my admiration for being mid-20s in Synergy. I doubt I'll ever make it and I flinch when I think of how much time that must've taken you. Or else you have a lucky Furnace. If you do have a favorite one that seems good for skill-ups, let me know D: I could use a hand here...
Sivara > Oh wow, I hate crafting as it is and this is definitely not helping. This sounds like such a horrible idea, just the same big timesink/gilsink pill with a new shiny coating on it. I thought it was supposed to be all fun and cooperative and "make impressive shiny shit with your friends!" (09/12/09 17:23)
Beanie > I think the base idea could rock, but so far the execution is lacking. In my own envisioning of it I can see having multiple people with multiple skill sets (like 2 Veteran crafters) working together to make a mecha-bed or something, but at the current level it's not necessary at all. Really, if they just started by increasing the skill-up rate so players can get to, well, the more fun synths? it might go somewhere. But it's like a book that takes a few hundred pages to begin the plot. Is the book going to be good enough to justify sticking with it or should you go find something else to do? (09/12/09 23:03)
